A Sustainable Business Model

Sustainability is a top priority for Coos Head Food Co-op. Through a monthly recycling program, a composting program, a bioswale, solar panels, energy-efficient lighting, and a Green Team Committee, we make sure we’re creating a sustainable business model that strives to give back as much as it takes.

The Green Team Committee

The Green Team Committee is a monthly work group that meets to ensure that Coos Head Food Co-op is operating in an energy-efficient, eco-friendly manner. The committee also works to push green initiatives out to the community. If you are interested in promoting all things green and sustainable, consider joining this committee. All are welcome!

The Bioswale

A bioswale is a vegetated ditch that's designed to collect, filter, and soak up stormwater runoff. It filters polluted rainwater, helps control flooding, beautifies the neighborhood, and provides a home to native plants and pollinators! Our bioswale was constructed by co-op members Mike Vaugn, Jan Hodder, Margie Ryan, and Jamie Fereday.

Plastic Round-Up

On the third Friday of each month, the community is invited to bring plastics marked as 2’s, 4’s, and 5’s to Plastic Round-Up at Coos Head Food Co-op! This free recycling event takes place from 5-7 pm at the loading dock in the alley behind our store.

We ask that you wait while volunteers inspect and sort your plastic. Plastics that are an unacceptable number or that are dirty will be returned to you. Plastics must be perfectly clean— no dirt, dust, mold, or food remnants, please. Sorting your plastics ahead of time by number is recommended as it helps to speed up the process. We hope to see you there!

Composting

Coos Head Food Co-op composts all compostable materials generated from our deli— coffee grounds, vegetables, egg shells, fruit, etc. Spoiled fruits and vegetables from our Produce Department are composted as well. These compostable materials are then stored in buckets in our side alley, available for farmers, gardeners, ranchers, or anyone with a use for them.

Composting adds organic matter to the soil, increasing the nutrient content and biodiversity of microbes. It conserves water, decreases waste, and improves plant growth.

Solar Panels and Energy Efficiency

Coos Head Food Co-op strives to be as energy efficient as possible. Solar panels on our roof provide our store with a clean, renewable source of energy.

Solar panels are a sustainable energy source that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollutants, and water usage. They also don't release harmful gases into the atmosphere and can help preserve biodiversity.
