Job Title: Cashier, Nights/Weekends

FLSA Status: Hourly/Non-Exempt

Pay Rate: $13-15

Purpose: The Cashier should provide prompt, friendly, helpful customer service and to quickly and accurately ring up customers' groceries, and to keep the front end of the store clean, organized, and running efficiently.

Work to fulfill all the responsibilities delegated to the Cashier by the Deli Manager, including:

Cashiering 

  • Greet customers and make eye contact
  • Become familiar with co-op policies and products in order to answer customer questions. Refer unresolved questions and problems to the appropriate staff
  • Check out customer purchases quickly and accurately
  • Call for back-up as needed so that customers wait as little as possible to be checked out
  • Bag customer purchases as needed if they need assistance. For those needing assistance, carry out groceries or call staff if necessary
  • Explain the benefits of membership to interested customers, sign up new members, ensuring complete information on the application.
  • Be responsible for and knowledgeable about monthly sales, specials, and upcoming store events to inform customers.
  • Return items following co-op policies and ensure that returns are properly handled.
  • Face shelves close to register when there are no customers to check out. Maintain front end in clean, orderly condition following Front End Responsibilities list located at register.
  • Take customer special orders.
  • Complete any other tasks as assigned.

Customer Service

  • Be responsible and knowledgeable for understanding the guidelines in our Customer Service Training Packet
  • Answer and route phone calls, take and route messages as needed.
  • Alert staff to potential shoplifters, disorderly customers or other emergencies.
  • Assist customers with product questions, in prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
  • Clean up spills, remove trash promptly, sweep and mop floor.
  • Advise General Manager of equipment problems.

Other Duties

  • Attend mandatory staff meetings
  • Perform other tasks listed on daily floor list and or assigned by the Floor Coordinator.
  • Responsible for understanding working member procedure.

  • Ability to stay calm under pressure.
  • Ability to project an outgoing, friendly personality.
  • Ability to stand for long periods.
  • Regular, predictable attendance.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing requirements of the job

Desired:

  • Ability to learn and use a computerized cash register system for extended periods of time.
  • Basic math and counting skills; ability to use a calculator.
